Apples are one of the best fruits to bake with, and for good reason! They are totally versatile and can work in a variety of different recipes. Not to mention they are good for you! I like to think that any dessert with apples has to be a healthy one, right? At least in this house it is! When my family craves a fall treat, I go to my Apple Crescent Dumplings recipe. These tasty treats are amazing. Serve them warm with a drizzle of caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream!
APPLE CRESCENT DUMPLINGS
There is something so satisfying about this warm and homemade baked apple treat. I especially love the cinnamon-sugar flavor. It might just be one of the best flavor combinations out there. Fresh slices of Granny Smith apples are wrapped up in crescent dough. I like to use Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls for this recipe. Once all the apples are properly rolled, they are placed in a baking dish and then topped with a mixture of melted butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Next, the secret ingredient comes into play, and that is lemon-lime soda! Sprite or Mountain Dew is poured all around the dumplings before going into the oven. This helps everything bake and bubble up to perfection.

Storage and Reheating
Allow Apple Crescent Dumplings to cool completely, then store in an airtight container or covered baking dish in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual dumplings in the microwave for 20–30 seconds or warm the whole batch in a 350°F oven for 10–15 minutes until heated through.

Holly’s Tips for The Best Apple Crescent Dumplings:
- Any Apple Works: Don’t have Granny Smith apples in your home? Don’t stress because there are plenty of options out there for you to enjoy. Try Honey Crisp, Braeburn, Gala, Fuji, red, or Golden Delicious apples instead. I personally recommend Granny Smith because the tartness balances out the buttery and cinnamon-sugar flavors.
- Even Slicing: Cut apple slices uniformly so each dumpling bakes evenly and the dough wraps neatly around the fruit.
- Seal The Dumplings: Roll the crescent dough tightly around each apple slice and place them snugly in the pan to prevent the butter and sugar mixture from leaking.
- Custom Toppings: Drizzle with caramel sauce or serve with vanilla ice cream to elevate the flavors of this easy, classic dessert. I also love to use chocolate sauce!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Absolutely! Assemble the dumplings and store them in the refrigerator unbaked for a few hours. Bake them just before serving for the freshest flavor and flakiest crust.
No, 7-Up or Mountain Dew sodas are great substitutions. Any lemon-lime soda will work! This is more for the effervescence, as it helps the dough bake into a completely desirable texture.
Soggy dumplings usually happen when the butter-sugar mixture pools over the dough instead of around the edges, or if the apple slices are too juicy. Make sure to pour soda around the edges and use firm apple slices.
To make Apple Crescent Dumplings dairy-free, substitute the butter with a plant-based alternative, such as vegan or coconut butter, and use a dairy-free crescent roll dough. These swaps keep the dumplings buttery and flaky while making the dessert completely dairy-free, with all the sweet, spiced apple flavors intact.
To make Apple Crescent Dumplings gluten-free, simply use gluten-free crescent roll dough in place of the regular dough. Ensure any other ingredients, like toppings or caramel sauce, are labeled gluten-free. The rest of the recipe stays the same, giving you the same buttery, spiced, apple-filled dessert without gluten.
