Spider Web Cookie
Create an easy Halloween Spider Web Cookie using chocolate chip dough, cocoa, and orange frosting for a festive Halloween party treat!

One of my favorite things about October is all the creative Halloween treats you get to experiment with and make. From Mummy Cupcakes to Ghost Brownies, there are endless ways to turn classic desserts into something spooky and fun. I surprised my kids with this spooky (and adorable) Spider Web Cookie last week, and it was such a hit! If you’re looking for fun Halloween desserts, this easy cookie is the perfect treat. I love making festive Halloween food ideas, and while I laughed when I saw a recipe for meatloaf monster feet on Facebook, I’ll stick with sweet treats like this one. My kids loved every bite of this rich, chocolatey Spider Web Cookie, a little slice goes a long way!
SPIDER WEB COOKIE
This Spider Web Cookie is as delicious as it is spooky! The base starts with refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough mixed with unsweetened cocoa, creating a rich, fudgy chocolate flavor that’s soft and chewy like a brownie-cookie hybrid. Topped with sweet, creamy vanilla frosting that’s tinted into a bold Halloween orange with red and yellow food coloring, it strikes the perfect balance of chocolatey richness and sugary sweetness. The fun part comes with the spider web design, piped in a spiral and dragged with a knife for that bakery-style look, and the playful decorations, whether you use plastic spiders or make edible ones from Oreos and M&M’s. The result is a festive, eye-catching Halloween treat that’s quick to make, full of flavor, and perfect for parties, classrooms, or family celebrations! 🕷️

Ingredients
- 1 package (16.5 ounces) Pillsbury refrigerated chocolate chip cookie roll
- 1/3 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
- 1/2 cup creamy vanilla frosting (I used the Pillsbury creamy vanilla frosting)
- 5 drops red food coloring
- 9 drops yellow food coloring
- Plastic black spiders (or make your own using Oreos, M&M’s, etc.)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 12-inch pizza pan with parchment or wax paper. Set aside.
Place cooke dough in the bowl of an electric mixer. Pour cocoa over the top. Using dough hook, on medium speed, beat together until the cocoa is completely mixed into the dough. This will take a couple minutes.
Place dough on prepared pan and roll out into a 10 inch circle. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
Place frosting in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook for 15 seconds or until just melted. Add in both food colors and mix to make the color orange. Place frosting in a small ziplock bag. Snip one corner and pipe frosting in a spiral pattern. Starting at center; quickly pull edge of knife outward through frosting at 1-inch intervals to make web design. Let stand 10 minutes for frosting to set. Place plastic spiders on top for decoration!
Slice in wedges and serve. (Reminder to remove the plastic spiders before serving so your little ones don’t get to them haha!)

Storage and Reheating
Store any leftover Spider Web Cookie in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If stacking slices, place a sheet of parchment paper between layers to prevent the frosting from smudging. For longer storage, wrap the cookie (or individual slices) tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 months—just thaw at room temperature before serving. Since the cookie is frosted, reheating isn’t recommended; however, if you prefer it warm, gently heat a slice in the microwave for 5–8 seconds before enjoying.
Holly’s Tips for The Best Spider Web Cookie:
- Choose The Right Dough: Use refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough for a soft, chewy base that’s easy to work with. Mixing in unsweetened cocoa gives it a rich chocolate flavor.
- Mix Thoroughly: Blend the cocoa completely into the dough using a mixer to ensure even chocolate flavor throughout.
- Even Rolling For Uniform Baking: Roll the dough into a smooth 10-inch circle so it bakes evenly in 8–10 minutes. Avoid overbaking to keep the cookie soft.
- Frosting Consistency: Warm the vanilla frosting slightly in the microwave for 10–15 seconds so it’s easy to pipe. Add red and yellow food coloring to create the perfect Halloween orange.
- Perfect Spider Web Design: Pipe a spiral starting from the center, then drag a knife outward at 1-inch intervals for a clean web effect. Work quickly before the frosting sets.
- Creative Decorations: Add plastic spiders for a fun look or make your own edible spiders using Oreos, M&M’s, or chocolate chips. Just be sure to remove them before your little ones try to consume them! 😉
- Storage Tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze tightly wrapped for up to 2 months. Place parchment paper between slices to protect the frosting.
- Serve Warm For Chilly Fall Nights: The cookie is rich and chocolatey, so a small wedge is plenty. Microwave a slice for 5–8 seconds if you prefer it slightly warm.

Pipe a spiral starting from the center of the cookie and drag a knife outward at 1-inch intervals before the frosting sets.
Bake the 10-inch rolled cookie for 8–10 minutes at 350°F. Avoid overbaking to keep it soft and chewy.
The frosting makes reheating tricky, but you can microwave a small slice for 5–8 seconds if you prefer it slightly warm.
You can easily make this Spider Web Cookie gluten-free by swapping the refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough for a gluten-free version or using a gluten-free flour blend. Most unsweetened cocoa and vanilla frosting are naturally gluten-free, but double-check the labels to be safe. Be sure any candy or chocolate used for decorations is also gluten-free. The rest of the recipe—baking, frosting, and creating the spider web—stays the same, giving you the same rich chocolate flavor and festive Halloween look without gluten.
