Ingredients

Apple Crisp

  • 1 (9 inch) pastry for a single crust pie
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 medium red delicious apples, peeled then chopped (You can use any type of apple you prefer. We love the flavor of the red delicious apples.)

Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce

Instructions

For The Apple Crisp

Roll pastry to fit a 9-inch deep dish pie plate; fold under or flute the edges. Combine sugar, flour and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Add peeled, diced apples and toss. Arrange the apples over the pie crust spreading out evenly.

For The Topping

Combine the first 5 topping ingredients in a bowl and then sprinkle evenly over the apples.

Bake at 350 degrees F. for 35 to 40 minutes or until apples are tender. (I lay a piece of foil over the top the last 10 minutes to prevent crust from burning.) Remove from oven and immediately drizzle with caramel topping. Let stand 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Serve with extra caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Servings

Yields: 6 servings.

Storage and Reheating

Store leftover Deep Dish Apple Crisp covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for 4–5 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 10–15 minutes to keep the crust crisp, or warm individual slices in the microwave for 20–30 seconds. Top with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for an ever yummier treat!

Holly’s Tips for The Best Deep Dish Apple Crisp:

  • Don’t Skip The Flour: Mixing flour with the apples helps thicken the filling so it’s not runny after baking.
  • Chill The Butter: For a crisp, crumbly topping, use slightly chilled butter and gently mix it into the oats and sugar instead of over-blending.
  • Prevent Over-Browning: Cover loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes of baking to keep the crust and topping golden, not burnt.
  • Add Caramel After Baking: Drizzle caramel sauce over the warm crisp to keep the topping crunchy while adding rich, gooey flavor.
  • Best Served Warm: Let the crisp rest 10–15 minutes before slicing and serving with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. It’s worth the wait, trust me!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I make this apple crisp ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the crisp, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. When ready, bake as directed and drizzle with caramel after removing from the oven.

Can I use a different type of apple?

Yes! While Red Delicious apples add natural sweetness, you can use Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Fuji. Mix the varieties of apples for a balance of tart and sweet flavor.

Do I need to pre-bake the pie crust?

No pre-baking is needed. The crust and filling bake together, creating a perfectly flaky base that absorbs the apple juices without becoming soggy.

How can I make Deep Dish Apple Crisp dairy-free?

To make this Deep Dish Apple Crisp dairy-free, swap the butter in the topping for a plant-based margarine or coconut oil and use a dairy-free pie crust. For serving, top with dairy-free ice cream or coconut whipped cream instead of regular vanilla ice cream. The apples, sugar, oats, and caramel drizzle remain naturally dairy-free.

How can I make Deep Dish Apple Crisp gluten-free?

To make this Deep Dish Apple Crisp gluten-free, use a gluten-free pie crust and substitute the all-purpose flour in both the filling and topping with a gluten-free flour blend. Make sure your rolled oats are labeled gluten-free, and the rest of the ingredients and caramel sauce are naturally gluten-free.
