Ingredients

  • 4 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 bag (10-ounces) marshmallows
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups rice Krispie cereal
  • 1 cup plain M&M’s
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • sprinkles

Instructions

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Set aside.

In a large pot, add the 4 Tablespoons of butter and melt over medium heat. Once butter is melted, stir in the 10-ounce bag of marshmallows. Stir constantly until marshmallows are completely melted. Stir in salt.

Remove the pot from the heat and fold in the 6 cups of rice Krispie cereal until combined. Next, stir in the cup of M&M’s and 1 cup mini marshmallows. Pour the mixture into the greased baking pan. Using a greased spatula, gently press the mixture into the pan.

Top with sprinkles. Let the treats cool completely before cutting.

Servings

Yields: 12 loaded Rice Krispies treats.

Storage

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to keep them soft and chewy. If stacking, place parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent sticking. Avoid refrigerating, as this will make the bars hard and dry. To freeze, wrap individual squares tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag; freeze for up to 6 weeks. Thaw at room temperature for about 30–60 minutes before serving.

Holly’s Tips for The Best Loaded Rice Krispie Treats Recipe:

  • Stir Constantly: Keep stirring as the marshmallows melt so the mixture stays smooth and doesn’t stick or burn on the bottom of the pot.
  • Remove From Heat Before Adding Cereal: Once melted, take the pot off the burner. The residual heat will coat the cereal without overcooking it.
  • Fold, Don’t Crush: Gently fold in the Rice Krispies cereal just until coated. Overmixing can crush the cereal and create dense bars.
  • Add Mix-Ins Last: Stir in the M&M’s and mini marshmallows after the cereal is coated to prevent them from melting and losing shape.
  • Make It Your Own: Swap the M&M’s for chocolate chips, peanut butter candies, chopped cookies, or seasonal candies. Just keep the total add-ins around 1-2 cups.
  • Grease Everything: Spray or butter your pan, spatula, and even your hands. This sticky mixture is much easier to handle with a non-stick surface.
  • Press Gently Into the Pan: Lightly press the mixture into the baking dish using a greased spatula. Packing it down firmly will make the treats tough.
  • Cut Clean Squares: Use a sharp knife coated with non-stick spray and wipe the blade between cuts for neat, bakery-style pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I make Loaded Rice Krispie Treats ahead of time?

Yes. They are best within 1-2 days, but will stay fresh for up to 3 days when stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

Can I use unsalted butter instead of salted butter?

Yes. If using unsalted butter, add a small pinch of salt (about 1/8 teaspoon) to balance the sweetness and enhance flavor.

Do the M&M’s melt when mixed in?

If you stir them in after removing the pot from the heat, they will hold their shape. Adding them while the mixture is too hot can cause melting.

Why add extra mini marshmallows at the end?

They create soft, gooey pockets throughout the bars and give the treats that classic “loaded” texture.

How can I make Loaded Rice Krispie Treats vegan?

To make Loaded Rice Krispie Treats vegan, use plant-based butter and vegan marshmallows (many brands now offer gelatin-free options). Check that your crispy rice cereal is vegan, as some varieties contain vitamin D3 derived from animals. Replace regular M&M’s with vegan chocolate candies or dairy-free chocolate chips, and confirm your sprinkles are free from confectioner’s glaze or other animal products. Prepare the recipe the same way, melting the vegan butter and marshmallows gently over medium-low heat, then mixing in the cereal and vegan add-ins.

How can I make Loaded Rice Krispie Treats gluten-free?

To make Loaded Rice Krispie Treats gluten-free, use a certified gluten-free crispy rice cereal (since some traditional brands contain malt flavoring derived from barley), and verify that your marshmallows, sprinkles, and candies are labeled gluten-free. Most plain butter and salt are naturally gluten-free, but always check the packaging to avoid cross-contamination. Prepare the recipe the same way, melting the butter and marshmallows, then mixing in the gluten-free cereal and add-ins.
