Ingredients

Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies

  • 1 box (15 ounces) Red Velvet Cake mix (I prefer Duncan Hines brand)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • 4 Tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces good quality white chocolate (not chocolate chips), melted
  • 1 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream or milk

Instructions

For The Red Velvet Brownies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 baking pan with butter. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix, egg, melted butter, and milk. Stir until mixture is thoroughly combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Pour batter into pan and spread out evenly. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes.

Cool completely before cutting. (After my brownies were cooled I placed them covered in the fridge for 30 minutes for easier cutting)

For The White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

In a medium bowl beat the butter until fluffy. Gradually add in the powdered sugar until combined. Add the vanilla, melted white chocolate and whipping cream. Continue to beat until very smooth. Pour frosting into a decorating bag fitted with any tip you like.

Cut brownies into triangles to mimic hats. Take one triangle (hat) and pipe frosting on the top and bottom of the ‘hat’. Serve and enjoy!

Servings

Yields: 20 brownies.

Storage and Reheating

Store your Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days. To reheat, place them in the microwave for 10–15 seconds or in a preheated 300°F oven for 3-5 minutes, being careful not to melt the frosting. Freeze uncut brownies for up to 2 months, then thaw before decorating.

Holly’s Tips for The Best Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies:

  • Use Quality Cake Mix: Choose a high-quality red velvet cake mix for rich flavor.
  • Don’t Overmix: Gently combine ingredients to keep brownies tender and moist.
  • Cool Before Frosting: Ensure brownies are cooled completely for clean piping and neat Santa hat shapes.
  • Chill for Easier Cutting: Refrigerate brownies for 20–30 minutes to make cutting triangles easier and less messy.
  • Pipe Frosting Tip: I highly recommend using a decorating bag with your preferred tip for more precise Santa hat details. It speeds up the process and makes it so much more fun if you’re baking with family!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I make these brownies ahead of time?

Yes! Bake and cool the brownies, then store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Frost before serving.

Can I use a different cake mix or make these brownies from scratch?

Absolutely! You can use any red velvet cake mix or your favorite homemade red velvet brownie recipe. Just follow the same baking and decorating steps.

How do I cut the brownies into Santa hat shapes?

After the brownies have cooled, place them in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. Then cut into triangles for clean Santa hat shapes.

How can I make Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies dairy-free?

Make Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies dairy-free by swapping the butter in both the brownies and the white chocolate buttercream frosting for a plant-based alternative, like vegan butter or coconut oil. Use a non-dairy milk such as almond, oat, or soy milk in place of regular milk. For the frosting, find a dairy-free white chocolate to keep it creamy and sweet.

How can I make Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies gluten-free?

Make Red Velvet Santa Hat Brownies gluten-free by using a gluten-free red velvet cake mix or a homemade gluten-free brownie recipe in place of the regular cake mix. Most of the other ingredients are naturally gluten-free, but always double-check labels to be sure.
