This recipe yields 40 small toffee squares (depending on how you cut them).

Storage

Store cooled Saltine Toffee Squares in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days to keep them crunchy and chocolatey. They can also be refrigerated for up to a week; just let them come to room temperature before serving. For longer storage, wrap individually and freeze for up to two months, then thaw at room temperature before enjoying.

Holly’s Tips for The Best Saltine Toffee Squares:

  • Use High-Quality Chocolate: For a smoother, richer topping, choose good-quality milk chocolate chips.
  • For Easy Cleanup: Lining your baking sheet with foil or parchment paper makes removing the squares and cleaning up a breeze.
  • Cover With Toffee Evenly: Pour the melted butter and brown sugar slowly and spread with a spatula to ensure each cracker is fully coated.
  • Don’t Overbake: Bake the toffee just 5 minutes to avoid burning; the goal is a bubbly, golden layer.
  • Add Candy Cane Topping Last: Crush candy canes finely and sprinkle immediately after spreading chocolate so they stick and don’t melt completely.
  • Cool Completely Before Cutting: Let the squares cool fully to prevent the chocolate and toffee from cracking or sticking when slicing.

Can I use a different type of chocolate for this recipe?

Yes! You can also use semi-sweet, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate for a different flavor.

  1. We need to make friends with more of our neighbors. I’m dying to make so many Christmas goodies, but if I keep baking, the husband is really going to start packing on the pounds! I bet the candy canes gave these little bites a nice, unique flavor. I’d love one, I’m sure.

  3. These are wonderful even without the chocolate – especially on graham crackers but the saltines give it a great salty/sweet taste. Easy treat – potlucks love these too
